Imam al-Shafi’i set the standard for loving Sayidena Abu Bakr and Sayidena Ali and showed how there is no conflict in doing so(from The Perfect Family p61):<\/p>\n

If we speak well of \u02bfAl\u012b, we will be called Raw\u0101fi\u1e0d[1]<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n And the ignorant fools will accuse us of taf\u1e0d\u012bl[2]<\/a><\/em>;<\/strong><\/p>\n If we speak of the virtues of Ab\u016b Bakr,<\/strong><\/p>\n We will be accused of na\u1e63b[3]<\/a><\/em> merely by mentioning them.<\/strong><\/p>\n It seems that, because of how I love them both,<\/strong><\/p>\n I will be guilty of raf\u1e0d <\/em>and na\u1e63b <\/em>until the day I die!<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Al-Bayhaq\u012b said, \u2018Al-Sh\u0101fi\u02bf\u012b only said this when the <\/span>Khaw\u0101rij <\/span><\/i>jealously and unjustly accused him of being a <\/span>R\u0101fi\u1e0d\u012b<\/span><\/i>.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n [1]<\/a> The Raw\u0101fi\u1e0d <\/em>were the ones who refused [rafa\u1e0d\u016b<\/em>] to accept the Caliphates of Ab\u016b Bakr, \u02bfUmar and \u02bfUthm\u0101n.<\/p>\n
